Characters being ripped from a life of obscurity and flung into a life of adventure or crime are a staple of fantasy. I'll tell you about some characters' previous occupations and you can tell me who they are.

500 words, spanking fic. Because I've been reading them all day and it seems like way too long since I wrote one :-)

huh.
Why is it that I feel the urge to paint my nails red every time some of my friends are at a Con? You'd think I'd paint them green with envy...

After having got rid of a few hundred lines of direct quotes in my MPhil, I'm now back up to just shy of 9000 words; I've also now realised that I need to explain the term 'guerrilla' and how it's being used in this context (mostly because it connotes a pitiful militarised rebel band rather than 'bandits' or 'brigands' which are the other potential translations). That'll take me over 9000. There is also QI soon. And, as soon as it's on youtube, the 100th ep of Criminal Minds, which is the only reason I didn't stay tucked in bed earlier.

ETA: Yep: 9090 words. Still lots of direct quote to paraphrase and ditch, but... *shrugs* Tomorrow I get to return a couple more books, so I can start taking things out again. :)

ETA 2: I've now moved lots of stuff off my bed. I have loads (as in abuot 2 dozen) of Loeb volumes now on top of my DVD plastic bin instead of my bed; I have several books ready to go back to the library, though I need to make photocopies of a few pages of each. I should be able to borrow new books from the library again soon! :)

I'll not be able to post tomorrow (I will be otherwise occupied for the entire day and evening) but I wanted to mark the sixth anniversary of my first ever posted fanfic, so I'll do it today instead. It is rather apropos, in any case, as 27th November 2003 was actually Thanksgiving :-). My first story was I Can Be You Oo Oo, which I posted on the Sentinel Angst list whilst suffering copious angst of my own at having bared my arse aired my fantasies in public!

My anniversary is slightly more poignant for me this year as I am definitely in the winding-down phase of participation in the Sentinel fandom. It's a been a great few years, though, so thanks to everyone who's made it such fun!

Happy Thanksgiving to my American friends. I hope you have a lovely time today :-)

title. A Charming Man
vidder. [info]giandujakiss
characters. Castiel, Sam, Dean, ensemble
rating. unrated
length. 3:20
summary. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
watch this. There is an stunning amount of variety in this to go along with the changes in pace of the song (The Wondersmith and His Sons by Astronautalis). Although it's nominally a Castiel vid, the Winchesters as well as the rest of the angels and demons are not neglected in the slightest, and a lot of different threads are woven together here really skilfully.

title. Unloveable
vidder. [info]giandujakiss
characters. Dean, Sam
rating. unrated
length. 2:29
summary. Jesus wept.
watch this. Oh, this is hurty in the best way. Set to Unloveable by The Smiths, which should give you an idea of the tone, this is a wonderfully poignant look at Dean's relationship with Sam (and the world at large) with a thought-provoking selection of scenes. (The last shot especially packs a punch.)

title. Kyrie
vidder. [info]giandujakiss
characters. Sam(/)Dean
rating. unrated
length. 4:24
summary. He watches over.
watch this. A lovely (and somewhat nostalgic) look at the boys and their relationship after the end of S2, with a particular focus on Sam, who is alternately badass, geeky, and manhandled, but constantly in love with his brother (possibly in an entirely non-romantic way.) Yet again, the last clip is killer.

title. Mr. Wrong
vidder. [info]giandujakiss
characters. Dean/Sam, Dean/various
rating. unrated
length. 3:52
summary. What a catch.
watch this. This was one of the first vids which made me want to download and keep it. The choice of clips is genius; the trip through Dean's failed approaches are hilarious; the summation of his less-than-classy charm is spot-on and pretty damn attractive; and the last twenty seconds are perfect. In short: this is amazing. ♥

reccer's note. Narrowing these down to four was hard! All of [info]giandujakiss's vids are awesome for SPN and for the other fandoms she vids in and so if you've got some spare time and want to be impressed, check out the rest of her SPN videos here. (Other fandoms can be found via tags.) Lots of them have been remastered recently so even if you've seen them before, you can go watch again and enjoy the new and improved shinyness. :)

So there I was making progress around Casa Chaotica on Tuesday night - right up to the point where there was a very unfortunate incident with my table, a very large cup of tea and the lappy.

End result?

One smashed to smithereens mugs and a lappy which won't switch on.

Bugger would be the word you're looking for.

Since I am being, for once in my life, fiscally responsible I have spent the salary that entered my account on Monday on paying bills and getting one up on the man. Which means I have no cash for reparing the lappy.

Agggh.

So I am AWOL with access at work only until I see whether I can get the desk top up and running and connect to the interbwebs - which is not going to happen until this weekend at the earliest as my desk (where the desktop lives) is covered with papers which must be dealt with first.

Two more nights with no web access?

How will I survive?!

It will naturally begin raining torrentially as soon as you are out walking to university (thus turning all grassy areas into sodden heaps).

(Yes, I know where my towel is. At home. :P)

So tired...

ETA: And then I walked home in hail. (After no one else showed up for Greek or Latin. We called off Latin and I just translated everything in Greek). Some days just aren't that worth it, really...

I'm at my folks for Thanksgiving. When we get together, we usually play a certain card game after supper. I don't even know the official name; maybe 'Traveling Rummy'? Starting with six cards, each hand has one more, and the target card combinations -- books and/or runs -- change with each hand.

So, we're in the middle of a game, the cards have been dealt, everyone has inspected and arranged the cards in their hand, and Dad turns over the first card, a nine of spades. Usually the next player wants it, or says she (Mom, in this case) doesn't want it, or another player (me, this time) wants to 'buy' it. I mean, it's a card game; something needs to happen to move the game along.

Instead, we all sat there, staring at it blankly, like it was a dead fish that had suddenly materialized out of thin air. This went on for two or three seconds. Suddenly it hit me what we were all doing -- staring dumbly at this innocuous bit of paper like we expected it to do something...

I started with a couple of giggles, then roared with laughter; so hard that I couldn't explain to my folks what was so funny. Each time I tried, I just laughed harder. When they finally understood, they were... faintly amused.

Yeah. Welcome to StarWatcher's version of The Twilight Zone.

BTW: I've now won this game three times in a row!!! Yes, it deserves three exclamation points. My parents think I'm funning, but I'm truly dyslexic when it comes to cards; I've struggled for years to play this game. I once laid down a 'run' that indeed had four consecutive numbers... but didn't notice that each card was in a different suit. I commonly confuse spades and clubs; I know they don't look anything alike, except when they do... I am frequently surprised to find that, "Oh, hey, wait... I've made the target combination for this hand!"

But even a dyslexic can learn a task if they keep working at it long enough. Mostly, I hunker down, and try to 'buy' as few cards as I can... as opposed to Mom, who buys everything, because it might be useful. So tonight, at the end of the second-last hand, I was last -- 30/85/105. But the cards fell right, and I had some good luck, and got rid of all my cards while Mom and Dad still had full hands. Final score -- 105/215/290. Wheeeeeee!

Have a great Thanksgiving, for those who celebrate, and a great day, for those who don't.
