I've got over 18,000 words written of this story: the working title is When The World Is Burning. It's SPN set after the S4 finale, gen with some het so far. As originally planned it will be Sam/Dean eventually, but I'm beginning to think it won't go that way. Still it's very much a Sam and Dean story.

But I broke my golden rule with this one - I started the story without the first clue how it's going to end. I can't post a WIP when I can't promise I'll finish it...but I'm itching to share at least parts of this fic. I think it's pretty good, but this is very much an unedited version.

So I'm going to post under friends-lock, starting tomorrow. I'm posting this, now, because I don't routinely friend people back. I don't post much under lock, and I try to keep my reading list - which is what my flist is - at a manageable size. But if you have me friended and you'd like to read the story, comment here and I'll add you so you can.

I'm not using any special filter, so if you already see my occasional locked posts, you'll see the fic.

I did it!

4,000 words of Sentinel fic in three days. That ain't bad going.

It's a first draft and likely needs revisions, but I'm at least happy with this one.

I spent weeks struggling with the first fic I was going to write for this, and ended up with twice the word count, and barely six words of it worth reading. I scrap it, and a new fic idea damn-near writes itself. Sometimes it just works out that way. The biggest part of my writing process is my "back burner"; sometimes story ideas sit there for years before I put pen to paper. I guess this one was just ready to be written.

I can't say for sure when it will be posted, as a) it's not beta'd yet and b) my SC buyer is entitled to a period of exclusivity if she wants it, but Wild At Heart is J/B slash (but not porn), set in the Cry Wolf 'verse.

I like writing long fic. Epic suits me as a writer. Somewhere between 20,000 and 50,000 words is about right, depending on how complex the plot may be. My Stargate SG-1 epic AU Phoenix ended up around 120,000; that's the longest single story I've ever written.

But writing a long fic takes time. Posting a WIP is hazardous; lack of comments on a WIP is discouraging, and there's the danger of running out of steam at some point and leaving the story unfinished. Lack of comments doesn't bother me so much on a completed story, but when it's a work currently in progress it feeds my insecurities. It shouldn't, but it does. On the other hand, waiting until I have a finished story to post means not posting anything for a long time. Working on my two big bang fics meant The Exiles is the only fic I've posted this year.

Anyhow. That's not quite the point. I have two SPN bunnies haunting me right now. In the past week I've written the beginning of both, but I can't possibly work on both simultaneously. And both stories have the potential to exceed Phoenix in complexity...and therefore in length. Man...I shouldn't even be starting one long fic with my uni course going on and other commitments.

But I figure it won't hurt to talk about the ideas, and maybe posting this will help me figure out what to do.

Despite recent events, I still love LJ. I like the community here and I like having friends. I'm not planning to go anyplace or change the way I post here.

That said, I've had an account at JournalFen for ages that I never used, and the whole strikethrough thing did prompt me to think about backing up my LJ someplace else. Of the LJ-alternatives I've found, my favourite is Insane Journal. Greatest Journal keeps dying on me when I try to edit posts. And it has ads all over the place. DeadJournal looks...well, dead. I didn't even register there. JournalFen has a great TOS (unsurprising; I know who owns it) but their LJ software is a very old build: no tags, no S2 styles even. And I know they're currently closed to new members. Insane Journal seems to have the best features, the site seems reliable, the LJ software is up to date and it seems kind of appropriate that what LJ calls communities are known as asylums over there. (And a permanent account is just $30. With the dollar as weak as it is right now, that's the price of a movie on DVD. Peanuts.) So if for any reason the LJ powers that be decide I'm not welcome here, that's likely where I'll end up for my day-to-day blogging.

As far as fic is concerned, I've finished backing up my fic in my alternate journals. Doing this made me appreciate why some folks like to have a separate LJ for their fic. I took advantage of not having reams of other posts to go through and tidied stuff up, got all my tags and links organised and listed everything in my memories. There, not here. Here I'm sticking with my tried and tested Fanfic Master List.

I'll now try to stay organised and continue to post my fic in those other places. So if y'all want to friend me in my other homes...details below.
