(Completely non-spoilery for the Trek movie as I haven't seen it!)
I used to be a hard-core Trekker. I joined the SF club at uni only because they screened TNG a week after the eps aired in the US. I was at the Generations con at the Albert Hall when the first TNG movie came out. DS9 is totally my favourite of the incarnations. Voyager seemed to get very lost and never recovered and Enterprise put me off by including MPREG in an early episode (I can't stand it in fic so I really couldn't bear it as canon!!!).
But I'm not joining in the general squee over the new movie. I'm not all that keen on the classic series. Kirk is a sexist, racist dick with terminal testosterone poisoning, and that, frankly, is the complimentary version of my opinion. Hero? I never saw it that way. I always wondered why Star Fleet was considered so wonderful if their standards were so low that he made Captain.
The problem I have withthe latest Trek movie Star Trek 90210 is this: if the characterisation of Kirk is consistent, it's gonna annoy the hell out of me so much I won't even sit through the whole movie. If it's not consistent...well, then it ain't Trek. So either way, it seems likely to me it'll be a big fail.
So this weekend, I'm going to see Cheri a lovely costume drama that isn't afraid to admit that women can, in fact, enjoy sex after turning 30.
ETA: No need to worry about spoiling me as I likely won't see the Trek film for a long while...but please consider others if you comment with spoilers.
